Over the last year, Jeffree Star’s Velour Liquid Lipsticks have been a huge talking point in the beauty community, and everyone is dying to get their hands on them. I’m a little bit late to the party (as usual) but I have finally gotten my hands on two of Jeffree’s liquid lipsticks, I have worn and tested them, and I am going to review them!
Though, I am going to start with a disclaimer: There is a lot of controversy surrounding Jeffree Star and his brand. He has said and done a lot of silly things, as a lot of us probably know, but for the sake of the post I am going to ignore those things and simply review his lipsticks as a product. My blog isn’t for gossip and rumours, so I don’t want anyone attacking me on this post like ‘how can you put money in his pocket when he is clearly a horrible person!?!?’. We all have our opinions on Jeffree Star as a person and a brand, but I’m not going to publicly state them here.
Anyway! Now that is out of the way, onto the lipsticks! I purchased the colours Leo and Scorpio from the Beauty Bay website for £16 each with free next day delivery. On the Jeffree Star website the price for liquid lipsticks is $18 each (approx. £14), but the international shipping costs start at $8.09 (£6.57), and that doesn’t count whether you get charged for customs or not. It is slightly cheaper to buy from the Beauty Bay website if you are UK based as it is £32 for both lipsticks with free shipping compared to the $44.09 (£35.79 without customs) you would pay to buy directly from the Jeffree Star website. Personally, I’ve never bought makeup from American sites so I can’t comment on how much the customs charges usually are!
Leo is the one I have worn the most so far, and is described as a ‘true matte honey brown’ on the Jeffree Star website – and also states that the lipstick is inspired by Jeffree Star’s boyfriend’s star sign (Nathan)! I have had a lot of compliments when wearing this lip colour, and many people have asked me what it is when I’m wearing it. I find that this colour is extremely wearable for everyday, despite the fact it looks a little dark in the bottle.
Scorpio is Jeffree Star’s own star sign, and is described on his website as ‘what happens when grey and purple make love’. Though this colour may look a little intimidating to some of you, it’s actually stunning on the lips, and is actually one of those colours that I seem to fall for over and over (my Gerard Cosmetics ‘Invasion’ liquid lipstick is very similar, and I also had Lime Crime’s ‘Cashmere’ on my list to buy which looks very similar in the pictures!). It may not be the colour you wear to work, but if you’re feeling brave and want to make a statement, this colour will give you confidence.
As a Gemini, I’m slightly confused as to why I didn’t get Gemini instead of/as well as these other two colours, but the colour isn’t as exciting to me… I’ll have to put it on my list for the future! I can’t just abandon my own star sign like that!
Both of the lipsticks dry down very quickly to a flawless matte, and I have realised that this is literally the only lipstick I’ve ever worn, liquid or not, that doesn’t come off on my teeth after I’ve applied it, and I do have very prominent front teeth. It really does cement itself on the lips, you’ll not find it moving around or bleeding, and unless you eat some oily food, these lipsticks will stay on for hours!
Although everyone knows that liquid lipsticks can be very drying and uncomfortable on the lips (Sleek Matte Me I’m looking at you), I find that the Jeffree Star liquid lipsticks are very comfortable to wear and definitely not as drying as some of the others I have tried before. I also expected that Jeffree might have fragranced his liquid lipsticks – like the Kylie Cosmetics and Gerard Cosmetics vanilla/marshmallow scented lipsticks – but I was slightly disappointed to find that they smell very ordinary, not particularly ‘chemically’, but pretty much just like unscented lipstick (how difficult it is to describe smells!? It’s so hard!). I found this slightly surprising as Jeffree seems to have quite creative ideas for his brand, and I thought something like scented lipsticks would be something that really appealed to him as a makeup artist/brand?
The wands are a very odd (but cool) shape, and very soft! In the photo above I positioned the wand of Leo on it’s side, and Scorpio with the wand facing upwards/towards you (so you can see the part you would put on your lips). As you can see from Scorpio’s position, the applicator is very broad which I bet is perfect for people with bigger lips, though it can be a little difficult for people with small lips like myself when reaching the thinnest parts of the lips (for me; the corners of my mouth). However, as you can see from Leo’s position, the applicator is cut very dramatically, and the edge you can see in the picture is the part I like to use for the areas of my lips where I need to be more careful and precise. Though sometimes, just to make it really easy for myself, I use a lip brush for the thinnest places!
However, the best thing of all about these gorgeous liquid lipsticks is that no animals were harmed in the making of them! The lipsticks are both cruelty free (not tested on animals) and vegan (no animal products used in the formula) which I think is very commendable for a few reasons;
- Most importantly of all, it doesn’t affect animal lives!
- The (undoubtedly popular) brand is setting an excellent example to other mega brands out there (Estee Lauder – the worst for animal cruelty).
- It means that the brand is inclusive to vegans, and may encourage others to adopt more cruelty free makeup into their makeup bag!
So, my final thoughts for this post is that I LOVE this liquid lipsticks and do recommend them to anyone! I plan to buy many more of these in the future. I already have some more shades in mind that I want to buy in future! Which of Jeffree’s liquid lipsticks do you have/want? Which is your ultimate favourite? Do let me know! I hope you enjoyed this post and I’m sorry it’s late – I’ve not been feeling since the start of this week but I’m just trying to push through it. Hopefully my next post will be on Monday as normal. Hope to see you in the next one! ❤
